Former UGC chairman and eminent physicist Arun Nigavekar passes away

PUNE: Former chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and eminent physicist, Arun Nigavekar, passed away in Pune at his residence on Friday afternoon due to prolonged illness. He was 79 years old. He was vice-chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University from 1998 to 2000 and the vice-chairperson and chairperson of University Grants Commission from 2000 to 2005.

Nigavekar helped establish the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) body as the founder director.. A. P. J. Kalam, the former President of India, dubbed him as the ‘Father of Quality Education in India’. He helped advance the use of technology and internationalization of higher education. He headed the committee of experts appointed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to review the structure of civil services (Main) examination and suggested necessary changes.
