gujarat board exam news: Gujarat govt postpones Class 10, 12 board exams; mass promotion for others

AHMEDABAD: The state government has decided to suspend class 10 and class 12 board exams amid the worsening Covid-19 situation in the state. The government also announced on Thursday that students from Class 1 to Class 9 and Class 11 will be given the mass promotion for the academic year 2020-21 without conducting the annual examination.

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) had earlier announced to hold class 10 and class 12 board exams from May 10 and May 25 respectively.

“The board exams have been put on hold in view of the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the state,” the government announced on Thursday.

The state government has said that the new dates of the examination will be announced after reviewing the Covid-19 situation in the state on May 15.

On Wednesday, GSHSEB said in a notification that the exam dates of optional subjects have been deferred and will now be held after the main board exams.

The announcement came at a time when the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the cancellation of Class X board exams. For Class 12, the ministry said it will review the situation in June to decide fresh dates.

Recently, Maharashtra and Rajasthan governments also decided to postpone Class 10 and Class 12 board exams given the Covid-19 situation.

As many as 17.5 lakh students participated in Class 10 and Class 12 board exams last year and this time the numbers are expected to be higher.

There has been a growing demand from parents and school authorities to postpone board exams in Gujarat. Various representations have been made in the last few weeks to Gujarat chief minister by various parents associations on this matter.
