Maharashtra Corona cases: Maharashtra surge shows why we need to accelerate vaccination

Last week, Maharashtra added more than 36,000 new Covid cases, which is roughly the number it had recorded in the 14 days before. The sharp rise has been blamed on carelessness, resumption of suburban train services, and virus mutations. A worried state government is weighing more lockdowns to stem the pandemic. The main lesson from Maharashtra is that all talk of “herd immunity” to the virus – premised on sero surveys showing more than 50% of the population has coronavirus antibodies in the big cities – is premature.

Immunity due to a prior infection is anyway weak in those who had mild or no symptoms, and wanes rapidly with time. So, vaccines are the only reliable way to protect people. Luckily, the number of Covid cases is still not very high in the other states that are seeing an upswing. India can still prevent a second Covid wave with vaccines and precautions
