Pune class 12 students despair over college future without board exams

PUNE: The growing uncertainty over the Std XII examinations has put students in a spot. At the same time, undergraduate colleges are confused over the future of admissions. Students are in a dilemma over preparation for the Std XII board examinations with the dates being announced and then postponed.

Many said they have been preparing for the board exams for 13-14 months now and it was frustrating for them to keep revising the topics until a decision was made. This uncertainty has led to a growing demand across the country to cancel the Std XII exams and assess the students based on their internal marks.

Charvi Rathi, a Std XII student, said, “We are ready to give exams but there should be a definite date and the board should stick to it. This scheduling and cancellation is more frustrating than anything else because we completely lose out on the tempo of preparing for the exams.”

Principal of The Kalyani School, Nirmal Waddan said the situation was already grim and would continue to be for the next few months looking at the surge in Covid-19 cases.

“Unfortunately, the CBSE or any education board does not have any choice but to immediately declare the cancellation of exams. The respective schools should be given the task of preparing the transcripts. The schools are already working on the grade X transcripts and in my opinion the same format should be followed for grade XII as well.”

Another Std XII student, Devansh Shah, said the thought of getting books in hand and doing the entire exercise of revision brought him the nightmares. “In the initial phase of the year, we were all very enthusiastic. then the exam dates were declared and we were still happy to give the exam. Later, with the worsening situation with Covid-19, it is extremely difficult to cope with what we have lost in these few days with respect to studies and we are not in the mindset to give any exam. The board should immediately take decisions on cancellation and relieve us of the exam pressure.”

Educators felt that the CBSE had come up with a very unique policy for tabulation of marks for Std X. Due to many internal capping introduced by the board, schools will not be able to do the moderation as per their own choice to show inflated results of their school.

Garima Goel, principal, Air Force School Chandannagar, Pune, said, “If std XII exams are cancelled, CBSE may come up with a similar policy with a few changes (may include the result of stds X, XI and XII) for declaration of the result for std XII.”

Ritu Mendiratta, principal of The Stepping Stone School, said, generally colleges would start their enrolment procedures on the basis of the marks a student obtained in his or her Std XII, hence it was crucial to have a strong grading system for Std XII if the board exams are cancelled.

“Our government had already taken a laudable step in 2020 by proposing the consideration of only entrance test scores for admissions to IITs, NITs, and several state-funded engineering institutes. The same could be applied in this academic year too, as we cannot raise our hopes on expecting the situation to be normal,” she said.
