“Class XII exams are very important in deciding higher studies and careers for students. There is no use in giving them all pass. All states are in favour of conducting the exam. So, we are also in favour of conducting the exam,” Poyyamozhi said.

The Union education ministry also gave the options to the states including conducting objective type exams and reducing the exam duration from three hours to one and half hours.

However, the state government expressed its reservations on conducting the exam in a new pattern.

“We asked for more clarity on these options and said we would discuss with our chief minister before taking a final call. Now, our focus is on saving people from the Covid-19 pandemic. Depending on the health department’s report on declining cases in the state, we will take a final call,” he added.

The state board schools are keeping the students busy even during the lockdown by conducting online revision tests.

Schools in Chennai are planning to conduct a fourth round of revision tests from May 24 to June 1 and unit-wise tests later to keep students ready for board exams. CBSE, state board schools have already completed practical exams for Class XII students.
